By Erewunmi Peace

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has won a clean sweep of all 25 local government chairmanship positions across Niger State, following the recently-concluded local government polls, and secured 271 of the 274 councillorship seats.

The results were officially declared on 1 November 2025 by the Niger State Independent Electoral Commission (NSIEC). In its statement, the Commissioner for Operations, Barr. Mohammad Liman, confirmed that all returning officers had completed collation and declaration of results in line with electoral laws.

Key figures and outcomes

APC now holds 25 chairmanship seats in the state’s 25 Local Government Areas (LGAs).

Councillorship wins: APC – 271 seats; opposition parties – 3 seats (two seats reportedly won by Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Tafa and Rafi LGAs).

NSIEC praised the role of security agencies, observers, media, and voters for ensuring the smooth conduct of the polls.

Next steps & context

Certificates of Return will be issued to the newly-elected council chairmen and councillors in due course, according to NSIEC.
Meanwhile, a 12-member electoral tribunal has been inaugurated to handle any petitions arising from the polls, with timelines prescribed by law.

This election result reinforces APC’s dominance in Niger State politics and sets the stage for the new local government leadership to assume office. Stakeholders are now calling for the elected officials to commit to accountability and deliver meaningful governance at the grassroots level.
