The Lagos State Police Command has confirmed that former Ondo State governorship candidate under the Social Democratic Party (SDP), Bamidele Akingboye, was murdered.
The confirmation followed the release of the autopsy and toxicology reports, which ruled out natural causes and indicated that the late politician was a victim of foul play.
Following the findings, detectives at the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Panti, re-arrested several family members and aides who had earlier been questioned in connection with Akingboye’s death. According to police sources, seven out of fourteen initially detained persons were taken back into custody for further interrogation.
Investigators also uncovered a suspicious ₦50 million transfer made from Akingboye’s bank account shortly before his death. The funds were allegedly shared among some close family members, raising new questions about possible financial motives behind the killing.
Police say the transaction is now a major lead in the investigation.
Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Olorundare Jimoh, said the police have forwarded all findings to the Directorate of Public Prosecutions (DPP). The next steps, including who will be formally charged, will be determined after the DPP issues legal advice.
The Commissioner assured the public that the police are committed to ensuring transparency and justice in the case.
The late politician’s eldest son has demanded a thorough and unbiased investigation, expressing concerns about delays and the handling of the case. Public interest in the matter continues to grow as more revelations come to light.
