Celebrities Avoid Owanbe Parties Over Soaring Aso Ebi Costs

By Erewunmi Peace

A growing number of Nigerian celebrities have started shunning high-profile Owanbe parties due to the rising cost of Aso Ebi, which many say has become financially overwhelming.

Actress Biola Adebayo recently sparked conversation on social media after revealing that she has spent over ₦2 million on Aso Ebi this year alone. In a widely shared video, she lamented the financial pressure that comes with receiving multiple party invitations, noting that some fabrics now cost far above what many can comfortably afford.

Another celebrity, identified as Jaye, also complained that Aso Ebi prices for certain events range between ₦300,000 and ₦400,000, depending on the class of the celebration. These testimonies add to growing public debates about the rising expectations placed on invited guests.

Similar sentiments have been expressed by other public figures. Actress Lili Afe recently went viral after disclosing that she was asked to pay $1,200 for Aso Ebi for a friend’s wedding. Meanwhile, actress Juliana Olayode criticized brides and event planners who impose exorbitant fabric fees, calling for more affordable options.

Industry analysts say the rising cost of living in Nigeria is contributing to changes in social culture. A recent report noted that some Nigerians now rent party outfits, shoes, and accessories to cut expenses as inflation continues to bite.

Despite the complaints, Aso Ebi remains a cherished cultural symbol at Nigerian celebrations. However, with fabric costs soaring, more celebrities and ordinary Nigerians are choosing to skip events or decline Aso Ebi purchases.
