Divorced Women in Adamawa Decry Economic Hardship and Social Neglect
By Erewunmi Peace
Divorced women in Adamawa State have raised concerns over increasing economic hardship and social neglect, saying the situation has made many of them vulnerable to exploitation.
Speaking with journalists in Yola, some women appealed to both government and community leaders to provide targeted empowerment programmes for divorced and widowed women in the state. They noted that limited job opportunities and lack of financial independence often leave many struggling to survive.
Mrs. Hauwa Adamu, who leads a local women’s support group in Jimeta, explained that many divorced women face discrimination and are often taken advantage of due to their financial dependence.
“Most of us are willing to work and live decently, but there are no opportunities. Some men take advantage of our situation because they know we need help,” she said.
The women called for skills acquisition programmes, small business grants, and stronger community support to help them rebuild their lives.
According to the National Human Rights Commission’s recent assessment report, divorcees and widows in Northern Nigeria, including Adamawa, remain among the most economically vulnerable groups. The Commission urged state governments to address gender-based discrimination and improve access to social welfare schemes.
Activists have also appealed to religious and traditional leaders to help reduce the stigma faced by divorced women and encourage family and community inclusion.
