By Erewunmi Peace

Gunmen suspected to be kidnappers have abducted nine members of a family in Edo State and are demanding a ransom of ₦260 million for their release.

The incident occurred on Monday, February 2, 2026, in Evboneka community, Ovia North-East Local Government Area, along the Eko-Abeku-Iyowa Road near the Benin-Akure highway.

According to local sources, the victims were reportedly ambushed and taken into the bush by the attackers.

The abducted family members included adults and children.

Security operatives and local vigilantes later launched a rescue operation. Reports indicate that a nursing mother and her baby were released shortly after the abduction, while three other children were rescued during follow-up operations.

However, four members of the family remain in captivity, and the kidnappers have allegedly contacted relatives demanding ₦260 million for their release.

The Edo State Police Command confirmed the incident and said officers engaged the suspected kidnappers in a gun duel during rescue efforts.

Police authorities also confirmed that two suspects have been arrested, while operations are ongoing to secure the release of the remaining victims.

The latest incident has heightened concerns over insecurity and kidnapping activities along major highways in Edo State and other parts of the country.

Authorities have urged residents to remain vigilant and cooperate with security agencies as investigations continue.
