Heavy Police Presence at Ekiti Magistrate Court for Dele Farotimi’s Bail Ruling

The Ado-Ekiti Magistrate Court was heavily secured on Friday as the Nigeria Police deployed armed operatives and an Armoured Personnel Carrier (APC) in anticipation of the ruling on the bail application of human rights lawyer, Dele Farotimi.
Farotimi, who has been in custody at the Ekiti correctional facility since December 4, is facing charges related to defamation. The heightened security presence included members of the Rapid Response Squad (RRS), underscoring the significance of the case.
The courtroom witnessed a gathering of human rights activists and civil society organizations, all rallying in solidarity with Farotimi. Supporters called for his release, citing concerns about his prolonged detention and reported health issues.Magistrate Abayomi Adeosun, who had earlier reserved his decision on the bail application, is expected to deliver the ruling today, December 20.
Farotimi’s case has attracted widespread attention, given his reputation as a staunch advocate for social justice and a vocal critic of government policies. His arrest and ongoing detention have sparked debates about the state of freedom of expression and human rights in Nigeria.
