Ten people, including four children, lost their lives in a tragic stampede at the Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Maitama, Abuja, during the early hours of Saturday. The incident occurred during a program organized to distribute food items and other palliatives to vulnerable members of the community.
The FCT Police Command confirmed the unfortunate event through its spokesperson, SP Josephine Adeh, who revealed that the stampede also left eight others injured. Four of the injured have been treated and discharged, while the rest are receiving medical care.
The incident, which took place at around 6:30 am, mirrors a similar tragedy in Ibadan earlier in the week, where 35 children lost their lives during a stampede at a carnival.
In a statement, the FCT Police Command expressed deep regret over the incident and extended condolences to the families of the deceased while wishing the injured a speedy recovery. The statement also highlighted the need for strict event management protocols to prevent future occurrences.
To enhance public safety, the Police Command has issued a directive mandating organizations, religious groups, and individuals planning large gatherings in the FCT to notify the authorities in advance. This measure will ensure adequate security is deployed to prevent avoidable tragedies. Non-compliance with this directive will attract legal consequences for event organizers.
The FCT Police Command reassured residents of its commitment to safeguarding lives and property. Citizens are encouraged to cooperate by adhering to safety guidelines and promptly reporting emergencies through the FCT Control Room via 0803 200 3913 or 0806 032 1234.
