Not less than 20 residents of Okija community in Anambra State have tragically lost their lives following a stampede during a rice distribution event on Saturday.

Heartbreaking scenes captured in multiple social media videos show lifeless bodies sprawled on the ground, as shocked witnesses recount the chaotic moments leading to the tragedy.

Confirming the incident, Charles Aburime, Chief Press Secretary to the Anambra State Governor, stated that the state government is closely monitoring the situation and will issue an official statement shortly.

This devastating incident comes on the heels of another tragedy earlier this week in Ibadan, Oyo State, where over 35 people, including children, lost their lives in a stampede at a carnival.
