A devastating prison riot has erupted in Mozambique’s capital, Maputo, resulting in widespread chaos and loss of life.

According to authorities, the riot has claimed the lives of at least 33 people, with 15 others injured. The situation is dire, with reports indicating that over 1,500 prisoners have escaped, although 150 have since been recaptured.

The unrest is believed to be linked to the disputed election in October, which saw the long-ruling party Frelimo extend its stay in power. Opposition groups claim the vote was rigged, and the confirmation of Frelimo’s victory by the country’s top court on Monday sparked fresh protests.
