The Nigerian government has announced the reinstatement of history as a subject in primary and secondary schools nationwide, starting in 2025. The decision, described as a directive from President Bola Tinubu, was revealed by Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa, during an appearance on Channels Television’s End-of-Year Special Review program.

Minister Alausa noted that the removal of history from the school curriculum by previous administrations had left significant gaps in young Nigerians’ understanding of their nation’s past. “We now have 30-year-olds who are completely alienated from our past. It doesn’t occur anywhere in the world,” he stated.

The minister emphasized that the reintroduction of history aims to reconnect students with their cultural and historical heritage. “We have reinstated that in our curriculum per President Bola Tinubu’s directive. That will be a part of the curriculum for our primary and secondary school students starting in 2025,” he said.

This move has been lauded by many education stakeholders, who believe it will help foster a deeper sense of identity and national pride among young Nigerians.
