A young woman, Ifeoluwa Adekalu, lost her life after being struck by an accidental discharge from a policeman’s firearm in Ado Ekiti, the Ekiti State capital.The tragic event took place on Thursday at the Okela Police Station. According to reports, the officer, who was visiting the station, fired the shot in celebration upon hearing the news of a colleague’s promotion.

Conflicting accounts emerged about the exact circumstances of the victim’s presence at the scene. One source claimed the bullet struck her outside a salon near the station while she was returning from paying her accommodation rent. Another version stated that she was at the station visiting her detained husband when the incident occurred.

The victim, a mother of one, was rushed to a nearby hospital but succumbed to her injuries.AIG Adewale Adeniran, the State Police Commissioner, confirmed the incident, stating that the officer involved has been disarmed and is now in custody. Adeniran assured the public that the officer would face interrogation in accordance with the Nigerian Police Act.
