BREAKING: Lagos Assembly Impeaches Obasa as Speaker

By Damilola Adeleke
The Lagos State House of Assembly has impeached its Speaker, Mudashiru Obasa, following allegations of financial misappropriation.
The impeachment took place during a plenary session on Monday, January 13, 2025. Obasa was accused of overseeing the withdrawal of N43.5 billion for backup vehicles and engaging in other controversial expenditures. These actions were said to be part of an estimated N90.5 billion allegedly misappropriated from Lagos State coffers between January 2023 and the third quarter of 2024.
In Obasa’s stead, Deputy Speaker Lasbat Meranda, representing Apapa Constituency 1, has been elected as the new Speaker. Mrs. Meranda, a former Chief Whip of the House, assumes this role amidst rising concerns about financial transparency within the Assembly.
Obasa, who represents Agege Constituency 1, was re-elected Speaker on June 6, 2023, after securing 17,214 votes in the March elections. His impeachment raises questions about accountability and governance within Lagos State’s legislative body.
This is a developing story. Further updates will be shared as they become available.
