Ibadan, Oyo State – In a grand ceremony held at the Government House, Agodi, Ibadan, Governor Seyi Makinde officially presented the staff and certificate of office to Prince Akeem Abimbola Owoade on Monday, signifying his ascension as the 46th Alaafin of Oyo.

The event symbolized the formal recognition of Oba Owoade’s reign as the custodian of the rich history and culture of the Oyo Kingdom. Speaking at the ceremony, Governor Makinde highlighted the importance of the Alaafin’s role in maintaining unity and preserving traditions. He expressed confidence in Oba Owoade’s ability to lead with wisdom and integrity, stating, “The Alaafin of Oyo is not just a traditional ruler but a beacon of our history. I am optimistic that Oba Owoade will serve with dedication to the development of the kingdom.

“In his acceptance speech, Oba Owoade expressed deep gratitude to the people of Oyo for their support and pledged to prioritize their welfare and the progress of the kingdom. He succeeds Oba Lamidi Olayiwola Adeyemi III, who reigned for 51 years before his passing in 2022.

Oba Owoade’s appointment was officially announced by the state government last Friday, marking the continuation of one of Nigeria’s most revered traditional institutions. The Alaafin of Oyo remains pivotal in preserving the cultural heritage of the Yoruba people and fostering unity within the kingdom.

The historic ceremony marks a new chapter for the Oyo Kingdom under the leadership of Oba Owoade.
