A New Era for Oyo: Prince Akeem Abimbola Owoade Ascends the Throne

By Damilola Adeleke

Following the passing of Oba Lamidi Adeyemi in 2022, the selection process for a new Alaafin of Oyo sparked widespread interest and debate. After nearly three years, Governor Seyi Makinde announced Prince Akeem Abimbola Owoade as the chosen successor, citing extensive consultations, divination, and intelligence reports.

The traditional kingmakers, Oyomesi, had earlier selected Prince Lukman Gbadegesin, but disagreements over procedural issues and internal dissent delayed final confirmation. The governor’s choice of Owoade, a highly educated and accomplished engineer, has drawn praise for aligning with modern leadership standards.

Makinde also upheld Yoruba tradition by consulting Ifa divination, ensuring cultural authenticity and divine endorsement. Despite some lingering opposition, Owoade’s qualifications and the governor’s transparent approach have been widely celebrated, marking a promising chapter in the kingdom’s history.
