High Electricity Tariffs: Tinubu Promises Solar Panels for Universities

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has announced plans to install solar panels in public universities across Nigeria to alleviate the financial burden of high electricity tariffs. This commitment was made during the 55th convocation ceremony of the University of Lagos (UNILAG), Akoka, Yaba. Tinubu, represented by the Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, emphasized his administration’s dedication to addressing the challenges faced by tertiary institutions.
The president noted that education is the cornerstone of national development and underscored this commitment by allocating N3.52 trillion to the education sector in the proposed 2025 Budget. Describing it as the “Budget of Restoration: Securing Peace, Rebuilding Prosperity,” Tinubu stated that the allocation demonstrates his administration’s resolve to stabilize the economy, improve lives, and secure Nigeria’s future.
To ensure that financial constraints do not hinder access to education, the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) has been expanded, benefiting thousands of students with plans to reach even more. Alongside this, systemic reforms are being implemented to address structural challenges in tertiary education, further reflecting the government’s determination to revitalize the sector.
The installation of solar panels is a strategic response to ongoing complaints from universities, including UNILAG, about the high cost of electricity. This initiative is expected to significantly reduce operational costs, create a more sustainable learning environment, and promote energy efficiency. Tinubu reaffirmed that his administration will prioritize initiatives that empower the education sector and position Nigeria for long-term success.
