UCH Performs Complex Surgery Despite Operational Challenges

By Damilola Adeleke

The University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan, has achieved a milestone by successfully conducting a complex urethral stricture reconstruction on a 50-year-old patient.

Despite facing significant operational challenges, the surgical team displayed exceptional expertise and resilience, according to a statement by the hospital’s Public Relations Officer, Funmi Adetuyibi.

The patient had sustained a pelvic bone fracture from a road traffic accident, resulting in a severe injury requiring advanced medical intervention. The procedure was led by Prof. Olayinka Shittu, a consultant surgeon and urologist, who described it as one of the most demanding in reconstructive urology.

“Reconstructing a urethral stricture is extremely challenging, requiring precision and expertise,” Prof. Shittu stated. He acknowledged the constraints of limited resources but credited the team’s dedication and the use of alternative power sources for the successful outcome.

The procedure, which lasted several hours, was completed without complications, marking a significant achievement for UCH. Prof. Shittu commended the hospital’s management for their adaptive measures in overcoming infrastructural challenges to ensure quality healthcare delivery.

Adetuyibi emphasized that this success underscores UCH’s commitment to maintaining its reputation as Nigeria’s foremost tertiary healthcare institution. The hospital continues to demonstrate resilience in delivering advanced medical care despite logistical and infrastructural hurdles.

Medical experts explain that urethral stricture, a narrowing of the urethra, can obstruct urine flow and lead to severe complications if untreated. Prof. Shittu stressed the importance of timely surgical intervention in managing such conditions.

This accomplishment highlights UCH’s dedication to healthcare excellence and innovation, reaffirming its position as a leader in Nigeria’s medical landscape.
