Vandals Strike Again, Disrupting TCN Underground Cables in Abuja

By Damilola Adeleke
Transmission lines delivering power to parts of Abuja were targeted by vandals in the early hours of Friday. The attack occurred on the 132kV transmission line and underground cable supplying bulk electricity to the Central Area transmission substation in Katampe, Abuja. This incident has led to power outages in Maitama, Wuse, and Garki.
The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) condemned the persistent vandalism of critical power infrastructure across the country. A team of engineers has been deployed to the site to expedite the restoration of electricity in the affected areas.
Ndidi Mbah, TCN’s General Manager of Public Affairs, appealed to residents to remain patient as efforts are underway to repair the damaged cables. The vandalism has disrupted 8 distribution feeders serving the Central Area and affected over 60% of Abuja’s power supply.
Preliminary investigations indicate that the vandals targeted the infrastructure near the Menillum Park area of Abuja, carting away 40 meters of 1x500mm XLPE conductor on two 132kV transmission lines. This has resulted in power disruptions in Maitama, Wuse, Jabi, Lifecamp, Asokoro, Utako, Mabushi, and parts of the Presidential Villa.

In response, TCN urged Nigerians to remain vigilant and cooperate to safeguard the nation’s transmission equipment. Engineers have been mobilized to restore power promptly.
