Christians worldwide mark the beginning of the 40-day Lenten season today, March 5, 2025, with the observance of Ash Wednesday.

Lent, a period of fasting, prayer, and almsgiving, leads up to Easter Sunday on April 20. The 40 days, excluding Sundays, symbolize the time Jesus spent fasting in the wilderness.

During Ash Wednesday services, worshippers receive ashes on their foreheads, a solemn reminder of human mortality and the need for repentance. Clergy members often recite, “Remember that you are dust, and to dust, you shall return,” emphasizing humility and spiritual reflection.

This year, Lent falls later than usual due to the lunar calendar determining Easter’s date. Despite this, Christians across the globe are embracing the season’s call to self-discipline and renewed faith.

Fasting traditions include abstaining from meat on Ash Wednesday and Fridays, while many also give up personal comforts such as sweets or social media as acts of sacrifice. Alongside fasting, prayer and acts of charity remain central to Lenten observances.

Pope Francis, in his previous Ash Wednesday homily, encouraged believers to detach from worldly distractions, particularly excessive social media use, and focus on spiritual growth.

As the season unfolds, Christians are called to approach Lent with sincerity, preparing their hearts for the joy of Easter’s resurrection message.
