Renowned Nigerian Writer, Mabel Segun, Passes Away at 95

Veteran Nigerian writer, broadcaster, and sportswoman, Mabel Dorothy Okanima Segun, has passed away at the age of 95.
Segun, who recently celebrated her 95th birthday in Lagos, died in the early hours of Thursday, March 6, 2025, according to a statement released by her family.
“It is with gratitude to God for a life well spent in the pursuit of excellence in Literature, Broadcasting, and Sports that we announce the passing of our beloved mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, Mabel Dorothy Okanima Segun (née Aig-Imoukhuede) in the early hours of the 6th of March 2025,” the statement read.
Segun was a literary icon known for her contributions to Nigerian literature, particularly in children’s writing. Her works, including My Father’s Daughter and Readers’ Theatre: Twelve Plays for Young People, have inspired generations of readers.
She is survived by her children, Omowunmi Segun, grandchildren, Rolari Segun, Damilola Segun, Ayomide Segun, Fikemi Femi-Segun, and great-grandchildren.
Funeral arrangements will be announced by the family in due course.
