Senate Unanimously Backs Akpabio with Vote of Confidence

By Damilola Adeleke

ABUJA – The Senate has strongly reaffirmed its support for Senate President Godswill Akpabio, passing a vote of confidence just two days after Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan (PDP, Kogi Central) addressed the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) in New York, alleging her suspension was linked to sexual harassment claims against him.

Dismissing the allegations as a distraction, the Senate emphasized that the matter remains a legal issue and should be determined by the court. Citing Order 40 of its standing rules, lawmakers maintained that they could not intervene in an ongoing judicial process.

During Thursday’s plenary, the motion to pass the vote of confidence was moved by Senate Leader Michael Opeyemi Bamidele (Ekiti Central) and seconded by Deputy Minority Leader Olalere Oyewumi (Osun West), with unanimous support from senators.

Meanwhile, the controversy surrounding Akpoti-Uduaghan’s suspension continues to stir political debate, with various reactions emerging across the country.
