Onaiyekan Warns Political Leaders Against Abuse of Power

By Damilola Adeleke

Cardinal John Onaiyekan, the Emeritus Catholic Archbishop of Abuja, has criticized political leaders across the executive, legislative, and judicial branches for misusing power to oppress citizens. He reminded them that true authority belongs to God, and they will ultimately be held accountable for their actions.

Speaking during a homily at the 17th St. Patrick’s celebration at Holy Family Catholic Church, Life Camp, Abuja, Onaiyekan emphasized that power should be exercised with a sense of responsibility, knowing that its holders must answer to God. Addressing Senator Victor Umeh, the Chairman of the Senate Committee on National Population and NIMC, he extended his message to all political leaders, urging them to uphold justice, equity, and the common good above personal or political interests.

The Cardinal also discussed the importance of forgiveness, noting that while no sin is beyond redemption, many leaders refuse to admit their wrongdoings due to pride. He criticized politicians who engage in unethical practices and later seek court rulings to justify their actions. He warned that ignoring public suffering would not silence the people, as cries of distress always reach God.

Onaiyekan drew a parallel between Nigeria’s current struggles and the biblical story of the Israelites’ suffering in Egypt, reassuring that God listens to the cries of the oppressed. He urged leaders to govern with compassion and reminded the Edo/Delta Catholic community in Abuja that their cultural identity and Christian faith should complement each other rather than be in conflict.
