Rivers Crisis: Wike Open to Peace Talks

By Damilola Adeleke
Lere Olayinka, Senior Special Assistant to the FCT Minister on Public Communication and Social Media, has stated that Nyesom Wike is open to peace talks aimed at resolving the ongoing political crisis in Rivers State. According to a report by PUNCH, Wike is not opposed to mediation efforts but believes that Governor Siminalayi Fubara should have immediately implemented the Supreme Court’s judgment upon its delivery.
The crisis in Rivers State began after Wike, who played a significant role in Fubara’s emergence as governor two years ago, fell out with him. Over time, tensions escalated, leading to political instability in the state. While some political analysts attribute the crisis to Wike’s influence, others believe Fubara’s actions have also contributed to the situation.
Olayinka emphasized that the National Assembly should take the lead in resolving the crisis, as it is their responsibility to mediate in state affairs when necessary. He also acknowledged that the Presidency has the authority to intervene if it chooses to. Despite criticisms that Wike is obstructing reconciliation, Olayinka dismissed such claims, insisting that the FCT Minister remains open to discussions that could restore peace in the state.
He further referenced previous mediation attempts by President Bola Tinubu, which were met with resistance from those who argued that the President had no right to intervene. Nevertheless, Wike is willing to engage in dialogue if the appropriate authorities decide to mediate.
“The minister is not averse to sitting down with people and discussing. If the National Assembly or the Presidency wants to mediate, no problem, so be it,” Olayinka stated.
