The Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC) has officially announced that local government elections across Lagos State will be held on Saturday, July 12, 2025. This development marks the beginning of the electoral process to elect Chairmen and Councilors in the 20 Local Government Areas (LGAs), 37 Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs), and 376 wards in the state.
The commission made this known in a statement signed by its Head of Public Affairs Unit, Mr. Tope Ojo, and made available to the press on Thursday, April 11, 2025. According to the statement, the current tenure of local government administrations is gradually coming to an end, prompting LASIEC to intensify preparations for a smooth transition.
In accordance with Section 21(I) of the LASIEC Law 2008 (as amended), the Notice of Election has been released, signaling the formal commencement of the electoral exercise. As part of the timetable, political campaigns and rallies are set to begin on Friday, April 18, 2025, and will continue until Wednesday, July 9, 2025.
Other key dates include a strategic meeting between LASIEC and all registered political parties on Tuesday, April 15, 2025, and the release of detailed election guidelines on Thursday, April 17. Additionally, political parties are expected to collect nomination and other relevant forms from the Commission’s headquarters. The window for the submission of substituted or sole candidates’ nomination forms is scheduled to run from Wednesday, June 18 to Wednesday, June 25, 2025.
In the event of a run-off or re-run election, LASIEC has set aside Saturday, July 19, 2025, as the fallback date.
The Chairman of LASIEC, Hon. Justice Bola Okikiolu-Ighile (rtd), reaffirmed the Commission’s dedication to conducting free, fair, credible, and inclusive elections. She assured political parties of a level playing ground and urged strict compliance with the outlined timetable and guidelines.
