NiMet Warns of Soaring Temperatures in Gombe, Abuja, Kano, and 17 Other States

By Damilola Adeleke

NiMet has issued a critical weather alert forecasting extreme heat across Gombe and 18 other states, including the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja. This warning comes as parts of Northern Nigeria brace for a spike in temperatures expected to peak at 40 degrees Celsius.

According to a weather outlook released on Friday and made available by Gayus Musa, the meteorological manager for Gombe State, the heatwave will significantly affect residents from April 12 due to recent clear skies and a break in rainfall.

NiMet listed Borno, Adamawa, Taraba, Yobe, Bauchi, Jigawa, Kano, Katsina, Kaduna, Zamfara, Sokoto, Kebbi, Niger, Kogi, Nasarawa, Benue, Gombe, and the FCT among the states at risk of heat stress.

“After three days of rainfall, discomfort levels are set to rise due to high temperatures and clear skies,” the agency stated. “Maximum temperatures in the North are reaching up to 40°C. With clear skies and atmospheric moisture, heat and discomfort will be more intense.”

Musa emphasized the need for residents to take preventive steps to protect their health during this period of severe weather conditions. He advised people to stay in ventilated spaces, wear light clothing, and drink plenty of water. He also urged them to avoid exposure to direct sunlight between 12 noon and 3 p.m.

“Stay in cool, well-ventilated places. Use sun protection. Drink enough water and avoid strenuous activities during peak heat hours,” he advised. “Also, we must remember to check on the vulnerable—especially children and the elderly—who may be more susceptible to heat-related illnesses.”

NiMet also called on stakeholders to intensify public sensitization on the risks of heat stress and the importance of adhering to safety precautions during the hot season.
