Nigeria to Roll Out 500 CNG Refuelling Stations Nationwide

By Erewunmi Peace

Nigeria is set to witness a major boost in its gas-powered transportation system as the Federal Government, through the Midstream and Downstream Gas Infrastructure Fund (MDGIF), has announced plans to roll out 500 Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) refuelling stations across the country.

The project is part of a strategic partnership involving the Bank of Industry (BOI), Endurance Group of China, and Séquor Investment Partners. The new infrastructure will be developed under a Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) known as CAM InfraCo, created to fast-track investment in CNG and clean energy mobility.

According to MDGIF, the nationwide rollout is expected to be executed within three years, targeting major highways, urban centres, and high-demand transport corridors. The initiative also includes the development of LCNG supply infrastructure, as well as CNG and LNG transport trucks equipped with truck-mounted cascades to create a virtual gas pipeline network for nationwide distribution.

Officials say the move will reduce long queues at existing CNG stations, boost the availability of cleaner and cheaper alternative fuels, and significantly cut transportation costs for Nigerians. The project aligns with President Bola Tinubu’s clean energy and national gas development agenda aimed at reducing reliance on petrol and diesel.

Energy analysts have welcomed the plan, noting that a successful deployment of 500 stations will position Nigeria as one of Africa’s largest CNG markets and create thousands of direct and indirect jobs.

More updates on the rollout schedule, locations, and implementation timeline are expected in the coming weeks.
