Northern Governors Endorse State Police Amid Rising Insecurity

By Erewunmi Peace

In response to escalating insecurity in northern Nigeria, the Northern States Governors’ Forum (NSGF) has publicly endorsed the creation of state police. The governors say the move is necessary to tackle widespread violence, kidnappings, and banditry more effectively.

At a recent joint meeting with traditional rulers in Kaduna, the governors stressed that Nigeria’s centralized policing system is inadequate for addressing security challenges in vast and rural areas. They urged the National Assembly to expedite constitutional amendments that would allow states to establish their own police forces.

The communiqué from the meeting also highlighted other measures, including a temporary suspension of mining activities in certain areas, to curb criminal activities and enhance local security.

While the endorsement signals strong political support for state policing, it is important to note that the initiative is still in the planning stage. Implementation would require legislative approval, funding, and logistical planning before state police units could be operational.
