Ooni Lauds Akogun Adeniyi as Nigerians in Canada Celebrate His 80th Birthday

The Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi Ojaja II, has lauded veteran journalist and cultural icon, Akogun Tola Adeniyi, as Nigerians in Canada and around the world celebrated his 80th birthday in grand style.

The royal commendation came during a special virtual message delivered to mark the milestone birthday of the former Managing Director of the Daily Times of Nigeria and long-time columnist. The Ooni described Akogun as “a towering iroko in Nigeria’s media landscape, a fearless voice of the people, and a dedicated custodian of Yoruba heritage.”

The celebration, organized by the Nigerian-Canadian community in Toronto, drew prominent dignitaries, media practitioners, and diaspora leaders, who paid glowing tributes to Akogun Adeniyi’s immense contributions to journalism, public commentary, and nation-building.

In a heartfelt speech during the event, Akogun expressed gratitude for the overwhelming love and recognition, stating: “I’ve been lucky all my life. I have lived for truth, culture, and country. This celebration is not just about age, but about values and the journey of service.”

Adeniyi, who has written under the pen name Abbas for decades, is widely regarded as one of Nigeria’s most consistent and bold columnists, known for his wit, satire, and unwavering stance on national issues.

The Ooni’s tribute further highlighted the importance of preserving cultural legacy and honoring veterans who have shaped public discourse through words and wisdom.

The event also featured poetry recitals, traditional performances, and a short documentary on Akogun’s life and career.

As the celebrations continue, many Nigerians at home and in the diaspora have taken to social media to honor the legendary writer with the hashtag #AkogunAt80, praising his resilience and commitment to truth.
