Rivers Lawmakers Return Fubara’s ₦100,000 Christmas Bonus

By Erewunmi Peace

Members of the Rivers State House of Assembly have returned a ₦100,000 Christmas bonus that was credited to their accounts, calling it unsolicited and unapproved. The payment, reportedly sent on the instruction of Governor Siminalayi Fubara, was returned to the Rivers State Government account following the lawmakers’ decision.

In a statement, the Assembly described the bonus as irregular, noting that it bypassed due process and proper legislative approvals.

The lawmakers emphasized their commitment to transparency, accountability, and ethical governance, stressing that they could not retain funds that were not formally authorized.

The incident has drawn public attention as a rare example of elected officials voluntarily rejecting additional personal payments, reinforcing the need for financial propriety in government transactions.
