93-Year-Old Illinois Man Charged with Murder After Fatally Stabbing Wife During Car Argument

Authorities in Illinois say a 93-year-old man has been charged with murder after allegedly stabbing his wife to death during an argument in their vehicle.

According to Pekin police, James Pate, 93, attacked his wife, 80-year-old Cheryl Pate, inside their car on September 2. Investigators allege he retrieved a knife from the center console and fatally slashed her throat.

The couple had been going through a divorce, and prosecutors say James told investigators he had built up anger and “couldn’t take it anymore.” Cheryl was pronounced dead at the scene, and an autopsy later confirmed she died from sharp and blunt-force injuries.

James Pate was arrested and charged with first-degree murder. Court documents indicate prosecutors are seeking to deny him pretrial release, citing the severity of the crime.

Neighbors and community members described Cheryl as a well-known and active figure in the area. The case has shocked Pekin residents, not only because of the violence but also because of the advanced age of the suspect.

James Pate is currently being held without bond as the investigation continues. A trial date has not yet been set.
