Tinubu’s Strategic Moves Test Peter Obi’s Political Strength
By Erewunmi Peace
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu appears to be gradually weakening the political influence of Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, especially in Obi’s traditional Southeast stronghold.
Recent developments show that several of Obi’s political maneuvers have not yielded the expected results. His endorsements in some regional elections have failed to translate into victories, raising questions about the current strength of his political machinery.
At the same time, President Tinubu has been making deliberate inroads into the Southeast. Governors such as Charles Soludo (Anambra), Alex Otti (Abia), and Hope Uzodinma (Imo) have engaged closely with the presidency. Tinubu has also received traditional titles, including the prestigious “Dike Si Mba” in Anambra, signaling acceptance among Southeast elites.
Meanwhile, some Igbo socio-political voices, including factions within Ohanaeze Ndigbo, have urged caution about another Igbo presidential bid in 2027—comments seen by analysts as indirect criticism of Obi’s ambitions.
Political observers suggest these shifts are part of a calculated APC strategy to dilute Obi’s grassroots appeal ahead of the 2027 elections. A Lagos Labour Party faction has also openly advised Obi to re-strategize if he hopes to remain a formidable opposition figure.
Despite these challenges, Obi remains relevant. Alongside former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, he has joined discussions within the African Democratic Congress (ADC) coalition to build a stronger opposition front. Whether this alliance can counter Tinubu’s growing influence, however, remains to be seen.
