Imo Government Demolishes Criminal Hideout Linked to Drug Peddling and Gun Running in Owerri

The Imo State Government has intensified its war against criminality with the demolition of a notorious hideout at Ama Hausa along Douglas Road, Owerri, suspected to be a major base for drug trafficking, gun running, and other illicit activities.
The operation, which was carried out in collaboration with state security agencies, forms part of the government’s renewed effort to sanitize Owerri metropolis and reclaim public spaces from criminal elements.
Targeting Crime Hotspots
According to officials, the demolished structure had long been under surveillance and was identified as a haven for drug peddlers, arms dealers, robbers, and vandals. Other nearby areas, including Hospital Junction and Arugo Park, have also been marked for enforcement actions due to recurring reports of illegal activity.
“We cannot fold our arms while certain areas become strongholds for criminals,” a government spokesperson said. “This demolition is a message to those threatening the peace and safety of our people—we are coming for them.”
Public Safety First
The Imo State Government reiterated that the crackdown is not just about demolishing buildings but about restoring public confidence and ensuring law and order within the capital and its environs.
Earlier this year, security operatives raided several forested areas across the state, arresting suspects and seizing a cache of weapons. This week’s demolition is seen as a continuation of that broader operation to disrupt criminal networks operating within and around the state capital.
Community Response
While some residents welcomed the development, others called on the government to follow up with social rehabilitation programs and ensure due process in all future demolitions to avoid affecting innocent people.
