DSS Summons Sowore Over Social Media Post Against Tinubu

By Erewunmi Peace

The Department of State you Services (DSS) has summoned human rights activist and Sahara Reporters publisher, Omoyele Sowore, over a social media post it described as “false, malicious, and inciting” against President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

In a letter dated September 7, 2025, and signed by Uwem Davies on behalf of the Director-General of the DSS, Sowore was directed to retract the statement he made on X (formerly Twitter) and issue a public apology within one week.

The DSS accused Sowore of calling President Tinubu a “criminal” in a post shared on August 26, 2025, where he faulted the president’s comments during an engagement in Brazil.

According to the Service, Sowore must:

  1. Retract the post on X with equal visibility.
  2. Publish a public apology in at least two national newspapers and two television stations.
  3. Submit a written representation to DSS headquarters in Abuja or via email.

The agency warned that failure to comply could attract “serious consequences,” noting that Sowore’s remarks were capable of undermining national stability.

Copies of the letter were also sent to the United States Embassy in Abuja.

Sowore, a former presidential candidate and long-time critic of successive governments, has not yet issued a formal response. The development has sparked public debate, with some Nigerians questioning the DSS’s priorities in a democratic society.
