Zulum Mourns as Boko Haram Attack Claims 63 Lives in Borno

By Erewunmi Peace

Governor Babagana Umara Zulum has expressed deep sorrow after a deadly Boko Haram attack left at least 58 residents and 5 soldiers dead in Darajamal community, Bama Local Government Area of Borno State.

The assault, which happened late last week, saw insurgents invade the resettled farming community on motorbikes, carrying out house-to-house killings and destroying homes, vehicles, and food supplies. Witnesses described the attack as one of the most brutal in recent months.

Governor Zulum, who visited the community on Saturday, commiserated with grieving families and pledged stronger security measures.

“It is a very sad and painful day for us in Borno. I condole with the families of the residents and our gallant soldiers who lost their lives in this senseless attack,” Zulum said.

The governor also announced plans to deploy forest guards to support the military and enhance protection for resettled communities across the state.

The Nigerian Army confirmed that five of its soldiers were among the victims, highlighting the persistent security challenges in the region despite years of counter-insurgency operations.

Humanitarian agencies fear that continued violence may worsen displacement and food insecurity in Borno, where millions are already dependent on aid.

Boko Haram and its splinter faction, ISWAP, have waged a violent insurgency in northeast Nigeria for more than a decade, leaving over 35,000 people dead and displacing more than 2 million others, according to the United Nations.
