IPC-SPJ Hub Condemns Clampdown on Press Freedom in Nigeria

By Erewunmi Peace

The International Press Centre’s Safety and Protection of Journalists (IPC-SPJ) Hub has raised alarm over the increasing clampdown on press freedom in Nigeria, citing a disturbing rise in threats, arrests, and assaults targeting journalists and media organizations.

In a strongly worded statement released this week, the IPC-SPJ Hub, headquartered in Lagos, condemned what it described as a “growing culture of intimidation and suppression” aimed at silencing journalists in the line of duty.

“The consistent attacks, arbitrary arrests, and harassment of journalists in Nigeria must stop. These actions violate the fundamental right to freedom of expression and the press, which are cornerstones of democracy,” the IPC stated.

According to the Centre, at least 45 documented incidents of attacks against journalists occurred in 2024, affecting more than 70 media professionals nationwide. These incidents ranged from physical assault and unlawful detention to equipment confiscation and digital censorship.

The IPC called on government authorities, security agencies, and relevant stakeholders to take urgent steps in protecting press freedom, ensuring that media practitioners can operate without fear or intimidation.

The organization also urged journalists to report all threats and violations through its SPJ-Hub platform, which was established to monitor and respond to issues affecting journalist safety.

This condemnation comes amid a wave of criticism from civil society groups, media watchdogs, and international observers, who argue that Nigeria’s shrinking civic space threatens its democratic development.

The IPC-SPJ Hub reiterated its commitment to standing with Nigerian journalists and defending their right to report freely and fearlessly.
