NiMet Warns: Human Lives, Buildings at Risk as Extreme Weather Looms

By Erewunmi Peace

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has issued a grave warning about the increasing risks posed by extreme weather conditions across the country, citing threats to human lives, buildings, infrastructure, and agriculture.

At a special sensitization forum held in Abuja, NiMet’s Director-General, Professor Charles Anosike, emphasized the growing impact of climate change on weather patterns in Nigeria. He noted that severe rainfall, storms, and floods are becoming more frequent and intense, endangering both urban and rural communities.

“The consequences of climate change are now more evident than ever. Extreme weather events are affecting lives, displacing communities, and damaging infrastructure,” said Prof. Anosike. “We must take early warning systems seriously.”

NiMet highlighted that roads, power installations, farmlands, and buildings are increasingly vulnerable to weather-related destruction, particularly during the rainy season. The agency also pointed out that these disruptions can severely affect the economy and food security if proactive measures are not taken.

Weather Alerts via Mobile Phones

In a strategic move to improve early warning dissemination, NiMet announced a new partnership with telecom giant MTN to deliver real-time weather alerts via SMS in multiple Nigerian languages. This initiative aims to ensure that even rural dwellers receive timely updates that can help them prepare and stay safe.

The agency plans to expand the partnership to include other network providers in the near future.

Call to Action

NiMet is urging state governments, emergency agencies, farmers, and individuals to take the weather warnings seriously. Citizens are advised to stay informed through trusted channels, clear drainage systems, reinforce weak structures, and avoid flood-prone areas during storms.

“Our goal is to save lives. We need collaboration across all sectors to mitigate the risks of these extreme weather events,” Prof. Anosike added.

As Nigeria faces the challenges of a changing climate, NiMet reiterated its commitment to accurate forecasting, public sensitization, and cross-sector partnerships aimed at building national resilience.
