Nigeria’s Power Couple: Winifred and Walter Akpani Command Oil and Banking Sectors

By Erewunmi Peace

In Nigeria’s corporate landscape, few names shine brighter than Winifred and Walter Akpani—a power couple whose influence spans both the oil and banking industries.

Winifred Akpani is the founder and Chief Executive Officer of Northwest Petroleum & Gas Company Limited, a major player in Nigeria’s downstream oil sector. With a humble beginning in 1998 and just ₦200,000 in startup capital, she grew the company into a petroleum powerhouse with a state-of-the-art fuel depot, tank farms, and a national network of filling stations.

Her husband, Walter Akpani, is the Managing Director and CEO of Providus Bank, one of Nigeria’s fast-growing commercial banks. Providus is known for its strong focus on innovation, high-net-worth clients, and digital financial solutions.

Strategic Business Bond

Interestingly, Northwest Petroleum is also a major shareholder in Providus Bank, further intertwining their personal and professional influence. Reports suggest Winifred owns about 34% of the bank, making her a key stakeholder in its operations.

Their business synergy is widely admired across Nigeria’s corporate space, earning them the unofficial title of “Nigeria’s biggest power couple.” While Walter focuses on financial strategy and banking innovation, Winifred dominates the oil marketing sector with sharp operational foresight and industry leadership.

A Model for Aspiring Entrepreneurs

Beyond their wealth and influence, the Akrpanis are seen as role models for young Nigerians, showing that partnership, vision, and resilience can yield enormous success in multiple industries.
