A tragic scene unfolded in Ogboji, Orumba South Local Government Area of Anambra State on Monday evening, as unidentified gunmen stormed a community meeting and opened fire on unsuspecting residents. At least 10 people were confirmed dead, and nine others sustained injuries during the violent assault.
According to eyewitness reports, the armed men arrived in two black SUVs and began shooting sporadically at attendees of a meeting organized by members of the Ebonyi community residing in Anambra. The motive behind the attack remains unknown.
The Anambra State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, confirmed the incident and stated that investigations have commenced. “Preliminary investigations reveal that the attackers drove in from a neighboring state and targeted the gathering before escaping,” he said.
Security operatives have since launched a manhunt for the perpetrators, while the injured victims are currently receiving treatment at various medical facilities across the state.
Local residents have expressed shock and fear over the attack, calling on the government and security agencies to strengthen surveillance and protect lives in rural communities.
“We were having our usual community meeting when they just came and started shooting. It was horrifying. People were screaming and running in every direction,” said a survivor who asked to remain anonymous.
The attack is one of the deadliest in the state this year and has reignited concerns about the rising wave of insecurity across the South-East region.
