Nigeria is mourning the loss of one of its greatest football legends, Peter Rufai, who passed away in the early hours of Thursday at the age of 61. The revered former Super Eagles goalkeeper reportedly died in Lagos after a prolonged illness.

Often referred to by his nickname “Dodo Mayana”, Rufai was a household name in Nigerian football during the 1990s and early 2000s. He was best known for his heroic performances in goal, particularly during Nigeria’s triumphant 1994 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) campaign and two consecutive FIFA World Cup appearances in 1994 and 1998.

Rufai’s international career spanned over a decade, during which he earned over 60 caps for the national team. He also had a successful club career in Europe, playing in Belgium, the Netherlands, Spain, and Portugal — including a stint with La Liga side Deportivo La Coruña.

His death has been confirmed by family sources and close associates within the Nigerian Football Federation. Tributes have begun pouring in from across the football community, with former teammates, fans, and officials celebrating Rufai’s remarkable contributions to Nigerian sports.

“Peter Rufai was not just a great goalkeeper, but also a proud ambassador of Nigeria and African football. His legacy will forever remain in our hearts,” said a statement from the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF).

Born on August 24, 1963, in Lagos, Rufai was also a trained sports administrator and once served briefly as Nigeria’s sports ambassador. After retirement, he dedicated his life to football development, mentoring young goalkeepers and advocating for grassroots sports.

Prominent figures, including former teammates such as Jay-Jay Okocha, Nwankwo Kanu, and Emmanuel Amuneke, have expressed their condolences, remembering Rufai not only as a great sportsman but also as a kind-hearted mentor.
