Tinubu Extends Customs CG Adeniyi’s Tenure by One Year — Presidency

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has extended the tenure of Comptroller-General of Customs, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, for an additional one year, allowing him to remain in office until August 2026. The decision was officially confirmed by Presidential Spokesman Bayo Onanuga in a statement issued on Tuesday.
The extension comes ahead of the scheduled end of Adeniyi’s initial tenure on August 31, 2025, and is said to be in line with President Tinubu’s desire to consolidate key reforms in the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS).
“President Tinubu has approved the extension of the tenure of the Comptroller-General to allow him to complete major reforms and digitalisation programmes already underway,” Onanuga noted.
Why the Extension?
According to the Presidency, Adeniyi’s extension was approved based on:
His track record of reform and modernization within the Customs Service.
The need to sustain policy continuity under the Renewed Hope Agenda.
His role in implementing critical programmes like the National Single Window Project — aimed at enhancing trade facilitation.
Nigeria’s ongoing commitments under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).
“Adeniyi has demonstrated professionalism, integrity, and strong leadership. The extra time will ensure the Customs Service stays on course in revenue generation, trade facilitation, and border security,” the statement added.
Background on Adeniyi
Appointed in June 2023, Adeniyi’s tenure has seen aggressive digitisation efforts, improved border surveillance, and increased customs revenue collection. He has also championed inter-agency cooperation and public-private partnerships to streamline port operations.
