APC’s Zulum Debunks Defection Rumours, Reaffirms Loyalty to Ruling Party

By Erewunmi Peace

Amid swirling rumors of an imminent defection, Borno State Governor Babagana Umara Zulum has firmly denied any plans to leave the All Progressives Congress (APC) for the opposition African Democratic Congress (ADC) coalition. In a decisive statement during a stakeholders’ meeting in Maiduguri, Zulum reaffirmed his commitment to the ruling party and warned party members against anti-party behavior.

“You either stay with us or leave,” Zulum said. “Anybody involved in anti-party activities will be severely dealt with.”

The Governor’s comments come in response to recent political speculation suggesting that he might be aligning with a growing coalition under the ADC platform ahead of the 2027 general elections. However, Zulum’s statement made it clear that he intends to remain within the APC and maintain internal party discipline.

Rumours vs. Reality

While some political circles have floated the idea of high-profile defections to the ADC, including Zulum and other northern governors, no official move has been made. In fact, Zulum’s address served as a direct rejection of such claims and a call for unity within APC ranks.

“We must not allow the opposition to divide us. If you no longer believe in the APC, the honourable thing to do is to step aside,” he stated.

Context and Political Climate

As Nigeria inches closer to the 2027 general elections, the political space is heating up with realignments, coalition-building, and defections across party lines. The ADC has reportedly been courting dissatisfied APC members in an effort to strengthen its national base.

However, leaders like Zulum—who has built a reputation for technocratic governance and strong party loyalty—have urged restraint, warning against premature political gambling and internal sabotage.

Despite the rumors, Governor Zulum remains solidly in the APC, and has issued a strong warning against anti-party behavior within the ranks. His leadership continues to play a key role in stabilizing the party’s base in Nigeria’s northeast.
