Ekiti: Man Stabbed Fatally While Giving Alms to Destitute

By Erewunmi Peace

A tragic scene unfolded in the heart of Ado-Ekiti over the weekend when a man identified as Deji Ojo, fondly described as a Good Samaritan by locals, was stabbed to death during a violent clash among youths in the Atikankan area. The altercation erupted while he was distributing alms to the less privileged.

Eyewitnesses report that Mr. Ojo, known for his humanitarian gestures, was sharing cash and food items with destitute residents on Saturday, June 28, when a heated argument broke out among recipients. The dispute quickly escalated into a violent confrontation.

According to police sources, Ojo was fatally stabbed in the chest during the chaos. He was rushed to a nearby hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival.

Confirming the incident, the Ekiti State Police Command stated that two suspects have been arrested in connection with the attack, and investigations are ongoing.

“We strongly condemn this act of violence. Philanthropy should not lead to bloodshed. Justice will be served,” said DSP Sunday Abutu, spokesperson for the state police.

Residents of Atikankan have expressed shock and sorrow over the incident. Some described the area as a volatile zone where social unrest is not uncommon, especially when sudden cash flow attracts rival groups.

Local NGOs and community leaders are now calling for increased security presence and youth sensitization to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
