Nigeria is in mourning following the passing of former President Muhammadu Buhari, who died on Saturday, July 13, 2025, at the age of 82. The former leader reportedly passed away in a clinic in London, where he had been receiving medical attention.
The news was confirmed by Bashir Ahmad, Buhari’s former media aide, in a statement posted on X (formerly Twitter):
“Innā lillāhi wa innā ilayhī rājiʿūn! Former President Muhammadu Buhari has died this afternoon in a clinic in London. May Allah accept him in Aljannatul Firdaus. Amin.”

Born on December 17, 1942, in Daura, Katsina State, Muhammadu Buhari first came to national prominence as a military head of state from 1983 to 1985. Decades later, he returned to power through the ballot box, serving as Nigeria’s democratically elected president for two terms (2015–2023) under the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Throughout his presidency, Buhari was widely known for his anti-corruption campaign, his efforts to fight insurgency in the North-East, and his economic policies focused on agriculture, infrastructure, and local production.
