Lagos Declares Manufacturing, Selling of Single-Use Plastics a Crime

In a bold move to tackle environmental pollution, the Lagos State Government has officially criminalized the manufacturing, distribution, and sale of single-use plastics (SUPs), with full enforcement beginning on July 1, 2025.
This follows a six-month grace period after the initial ban was announced in January. The enforcement covers commonly used items such as styrofoam food packs, plastic straws, disposable cups, plastic cutlery, and lightweight nylon bags under 40 microns.
The Lagos State Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, confirmed the development during a press briefing, stating that any business or individual found dealing in these prohibited materials will face seizure of goods, sealing of premises, and prosecution under the state’s environmental laws.
“The era of environmental negligence is over. We have commenced enforcement across markets and commercial spaces. The health of Lagosians and the protection of our environment come first,” Wahab declared.
The crackdown began immediately, with environmental task force officials visiting major markets and sealing non-compliant businesses. Residents are encouraged to adopt eco-friendly alternatives, such as reusable bags and biodegradable packaging.
The government says this measure aims to reduce the massive waste clogging drainage systems, polluting waterways, and contributing to flooding across the state.
Environmental groups and climate advocates have applauded the decision, calling it a much-needed step toward sustainable waste management in Nigeria’s most populous state.
As enforcement continues, residents and business owners are advised to comply with the new law to avoid penalties.
