Awujale: Governor Abiodun Speaks After Crucial Meeting with Kingmakers
By Erewunmi Peace
The Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, has assured that the selection of the next Awujale of Ijebuland will follow due process, emphasizing transparency and fairness.
The Governor made this statement after a closed-door meeting with the Awujale Chiefs in Council on Monday in Ijebu-Ode. The meeting comes after the death of the late Awujale, Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona, who passed away on July 13, 2025, after an illustrious reign of 65 years.
Addressing newsmen, Governor Abiodun said:
“Nature abhors a vacuum. It is important that the regency process is conducted in line with the law and our cherished customs. We will support the kingmakers in ensuring a level playing ground for all contestants.”
The Governor praised the unity among the Chiefs in Council, noting that there was no division or conflict regarding the succession process.
According to tradition, the Awujale throne rotates among four ruling houses: Anikinaiya, Fusengbuwa, Fidipote, and Gbelegbuwa. With the late Oba Adetona coming from the Anikinaiya house, the next Awujale is expected to emerge from the Fusengbuwa ruling house.
The selection process will involve nominations from the ruling house, screening by the Odis, and final approval by the 13 kingmakers representing various traditional councils. The candidate with unanimous support will be declared the new Awujale.
Governor Abiodun reaffirmed the government’s commitment to supporting the traditional institution and ensuring a peaceful transition:
“We will stand by the kingmakers to ensure that this process remains fair, transparent, and devoid of rancor.”
What Happens Next?
The Fusengbuwa ruling house is expected to submit candidates in the coming weeks, with the official installation projected before the end of 2025.
