Exclusive: How Former Minister Malami and Ex-Rep Shehu Koko Imported Notorious Bandits to Destabilise Kebbi

By Erewunmi Peace

A report circulating online has alleged that former Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF) and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami (SAN), and former House of Representatives member, Shehu Koko, imported notorious bandits to destabilize Kebbi State.

The sensational claim, which surfaced on online forums and blogs, accuses the duo of using their political influence to sponsor insecurity in the state.

What We Found

So far, there is no credible evidence to support this allegation. Reputable media outlets including Channels Television, Vanguard, Premium Times, and Leadership have not reported any such development.

What has been reported, however, includes:

Malami’s convoy being attacked in Birnin Kebbi earlier this year, which the APC publicly denied involvement in.

Malami’s statements on the Zuru bandit attack in June 2025, which were criticized by Kebbi officials and civic groups for allegedly exaggerating casualty figures.

Widespread concerns about rising insecurity in Kebbi State, but no verified link tying Malami or Koko to the sponsorship of bandits.

Why It Matters

Nigeria has faced increasing cases of insecurity, including banditry in the Northwest. Political tensions in Kebbi have further fueled rumors and unverified stories. Sharing such claims without verification risks misleading the public and inflaming political divisions.

Verdict

The allegation that Malami and Shehu Koko imported bandits to destabilize Kebbi is unverified and currently unsupported by credible evidence. Until proven otherwise by law enforcement or reliable investigative journalism, it should be treated as rumor, not fact.
