The Lagos State University (LASU) Governing Council has approved the immediate dismissal of two senior academic staff, including the Dean of the Faculty of Agriculture at the university’s Epe Campus, over allegations of sexual harassment, misconduct, and financial impropriety.
This decision was taken during the institution’s 143rd Statutory Governing Council meeting held on Wednesday, July 3, 2025.
Names and Offences
The dismissed officials are:
Dr. Olatunji Tajudeen Fasasi Abanikanda, Dean of the Faculty of Agriculture, Epe Campus
Dr. Khadeejah Kareem-Ibraheem, a lecturer in the Department of Animal Science
According to a statement from LASU’s spokesperson, the disciplinary committee found Dr. Abanikanda guilty of:
Sexual harassment of female students
Verbal abuse and intimidation
Forcing 400-level students to endure harsh physical conditions during farm work
Collecting unauthorized levies and funds from students
Meanwhile, Dr. Kareem-Ibraheem was indicted for financial misconduct. She was accused of withholding over ₦10.6 million generated from the sale of farm produce and failing to remit the funds to the university’s account.
“After thorough investigations and due process, the council found both staff members guilty of serious misconducts that violate LASU’s code of ethics and professional standards,” the university said.
LASU’s Stand
The university emphasized that it maintains a zero-tolerance policy for all forms of sexual harassment, exploitation, and corruption within its academic community. The dismissal serves as a stern warning to other members of staff to uphold integrity and professional conduct.
Stakeholders and student groups have commended the decision, describing it as a bold move to sanitize the institution and protect students from abuse and exploitation.
The university assured the public of its continued commitment to accountability, transparency, and creating a safe learning environment for all.
