Death Toll Mounts: 130 Security Personnel Killed in Katsina Bandit Attacks
By Erewunmi Peace
Over 130 security personnel, including members of the police, army, and local vigilante groups, have been killed in Katsina State in the ongoing battle against armed bandits.
This figure was revealed by Dr. Nasiru Mua’zu, Katsina State’s Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, during a public security briefing in the state capital. The announcement underscores the heavy human toll paid in the fight to restore peace in one of Nigeria’s most troubled regions.
Tragic Breakdown of Casualties
According to Dr. Mua’zu:
Over 100 members of the Katsina Community Watch Corps (a state-backed volunteer security outfit) have died while confronting armed bandits in rural areas.
More than 30 police officers were killed during joint operations and ambushes.
Several soldiers also lost their lives, though the exact number was not disclosed.
“These men died as heroes, sacrificing their lives to protect communities from ruthless bandits who have made life unbearable for innocent citizens,” Dr. Mua’zu said.
Worsening Security in Northwest Nigeria
Katsina State, the home state of former President Muhammadu Buhari, has been plagued by years of insecurity, including:
Armed banditry
Mass abductions
Attacks on rural villages
Cattle rustling and farm invasions
Despite several military operations and airstrikes launched in recent years, the bandits remain resilient, adapting and launching coordinated attacks on security formations and local communities.
Government Response
The Katsina State Government says it remains committed to:
Expanding and strengthening the Community Watch Corps
Improving intelligence-sharing with federal security agencies
Supporting the families of fallen operatives through state welfare packages
Dr. Mua’zu also appealed for greater federal support, especially in terms of equipment, surveillance technology, and military logistics, to help curb the rising insecurity.
