Jonathan Calls for Comprehensive Electoral Reforms Ahead of 2027 Elections

Former President Goodluck Jonathan has renewed calls for sweeping electoral reforms in Nigeria, urging stakeholders to strengthen democratic institutions and restore public confidence in the electoral process.
Speaking at the National Action Plan for Electoral Reform Dialogue, Jonathan—represented by Ann Iyonu, Executive Director of the Goodluck Jonathan Foundation—emphasized the need to review the framework for appointing the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) chairman. He proposed the creation of an independent panel comprising members from the judiciary, civil society organizations, professional bodies, academia, and trade unions to ensure credibility and neutrality.
Jonathan also decried the rising cases of political defections, describing the trend as detrimental to democratic stability. He suggested the establishment of an Office of the Registrar of Political Parties to regulate party operations and curb indiscriminate defections, including enforcing penalties such as vacating the seats of defectors.
The former President further called for the resolution of all election petitions before the swearing-in of winners, warning that the current practice undermines governance and erodes trust in the judiciary and electoral system.
“These reforms are essential if we must build an inclusive and credible democratic process where the will of the people truly prevails,” he said.
Jonathan urged political leaders, civil society, and Nigerians to work collectively towards strengthening electoral integrity ahead of the 2027 general elections.
