Encomiums Pour in for Dr. Doyinsola Abiola at Night of Tributes

A galaxy of dignitaries, family members, and associates gathered at Harbour Point, Victoria Island, Lagos, for a “Night of Tributes” in honor of Dr. Hamidat Doyinsola Abiola, the trailblazing journalist who passed away on August 5, 2025, at the age of 82.

Dr. Abiola, widely celebrated as a pioneer in Nigerian journalism, was the first woman appointed as a newspaper editor in Nigeria and later rose to become the Managing Director/Editor-in-Chief of the Concord Group of Newspapers. Her career broke gender barriers and positioned her as a role model for women in the media.

A Night of Dignitaries and Tributes

The event drew high-profile attendees, including Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, former Vice President Professor Yemi Osinbajo, and Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, who was represented by the Secretary to the State Government of Lagos State.

Messages of tribute were also delivered from eminent figures such as President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, former Ghanaian President John Kufuor, and Nobel laureate Professor Wole Soyinka.

Celebrating a Legacy of Courage

Speakers described Dr. Abiola as an “Amazon,” “icon,” and “pioneer”, praising her courage in sustaining the Concord titles during Nigeria’s democratic struggles. She was remembered not only for her journalistic achievements but also for her activism, patriotism, and dedication to advancing democracy.

Beyond her professional contributions, she was celebrated as a loving mother, mentor, and patriot, whose influence extended far beyond the newsroom.
