“Meet Me in Court” — Adeyanju Rejects Peter Obi’s Demand to Retract Defamation Claims

By Erewunmi Peace

Nigerian activist Deji Adeyanju has dismissed a legal notice from former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi, who demanded a public retraction of alleged defamatory statements. Adeyanju, in a fiery response on social media, declared he is ready to face Obi in court.

Obi’s legal team, through Ejesimen & Co. Madiba Chambers (SAN), issued a letter dated August 26, 2025, accusing Adeyanju of publishing false and damaging statements on social media, portraying the former governor as “corrupt, fraudulent, and a religious bigot.” The letter demanded that Adeyanju:

Delete all defamatory posts

Issue a public apology on his social media platforms

Publish apologies in three national newspapers

Failure to comply within seven days, Obi’s lawyers warned, would result in a lawsuit seeking aggravated damages, injunctions, and legal costs.

However, Adeyanju took to his Facebook page to ridicule the demand, saying:

“Just got this letter from Peter Obi the religious bigot demanding a retraction from me. I laughed so hard. A fraud parading himself as a messiah. I can’t wait for us to meet in court.”

The activist also referenced an earlier confrontation involving Serah Ibrahim, an aide to Obi, over alleged defamatory remarks against his wife, noting that his legal team had also issued her a retraction notice.

The legal standoff has ignited widespread reactions online, with both camps trending on social media as Nigerians debate the implications of the case.

Quote from Adeyanju:

“A fraud parading himself as a messiah. I can’t wait for us to meet in court.”

Current Status:

As of the time of this report, neither party has initiated formal court proceedings, but Adeyanju’s statement suggests a legal showdown is imminent if Obi proceeds with his threat.
